Art (Studio, 2D and 2D Focus) is a one credit, full year course that focuses on the elements of art and the principles of design and how they work together to create our visual world. On a daily basis, this course emphasizes the connections that the arts share with social studies, language arts, math and science and how they relate to our world today. The class environment and structure incorporates problem solving, collaboration, cooperation, creativity and responsibility.
Purpose: High School art provides an introduction to art through a multimedia experience. Students will learn and apply the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to produce creative works of art that reflect their understanding of these concepts. They will develop technical skill as well as learn how to engage and persist, envision, express, observe, reflect, sketch and explore, and gain an understanding of the art world.
Materials: Students only need a pencil, eraser and a creative mind. You will be required to bring with you your sketchbook that you will make in class. All materials will be provided.
Daily Expectations: Students are expected to be present and on time on a daily basis. It is expected that they use your time in class constructively and focus on the task at hand. There is also the expectation that students are kind and respectful to others in the class and that there is care given to the materials and classroom. The expectation is that students come to class with a good attitude and that they follow the rules of the classroom and the school.
If a student misses a class or part of a class, it is the student’s responsibility to come during teacher contact time (2:30 – 2:50) and find out what information has been missed, and make up the time you were absent.
Objectives: The goal of this class is:
Grading: Grades are based on individual participation, effort and attitude. The expectation is that students build on prior art knowledge and experience and ultimately, grow as an artist and as a young adult. Grades are not based on how good you are at art but how hard you try, how well you accept challenges, and how well you work within the structure of the class. Everybody has the ability to do well. There is a grading rubric that the students, along with the teacher, will use to assess the student grade on a daily basis.

1st marking period
- All About Me – An autobiographical sketch book. A sketchbook created by the students that incorporates images that represent 12 significant elements about themselves. This unit introduces the seven elements – line, shape, color, form, space, texture, and value - of art and how they are used and manipulated in the visual arts. Students will be introduced to the eight character elements, a system of critique and the process of self-evaluation. Students will plan, create, and use these sketchbooks throughout the year to sketch and keep notes, to respond, to reflect, etc.
- Line Environment - A unit that focuses on the Elements of Art – line, shape, color, form, space, texture, and value - of art and how they are used and manipulated in the visual arts. Students will gradually add elements to create a landscape.
- Zentangle Design – A unit that focuses on the Principles of Design – balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity.
2nd marking period
Introduction to the tools and equipment in the classroom and the basic art elements of color, texture and line
- A work of art that illustrates one of the eight character elements that the student feels they need to work on the most. The artwork will incorporate visual elements that support and describe the character element that the students choose. Students will create sketches using the element of shape, form and space and then they will create that piece using mixed media.
- Color and Value – Students will identify hue, value and intensity as the properties of color. Students will compare and contrast the use of color and value in different artworks as well as analyze the use of color to express meaning. Students will experiment with color mixing using various materials such as watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and colored pencil. Sketches and color mixing experiments will be documented in their sketch books.
- Texture – Students will experience how texture is perceived through the senses. Students will compare and contrast texture in personal artwork as well as work from others. Additionally, students will analyze texture in the artwork of others to express meaning.
- Line – Students will compare and contrast the use of line. Students will identify the different kinds of line and the ways line can vary in appearance. Students will learn about the different qualities in lines and how those qualities can express emotion. Students will experiment with creating designs using line and design and pattern.
3rd and 4th marking periods
- Student choice studio structure – Students will be introduced to the principles of design and understand how to communicate visually by manipulating these principles. Students will have a list of project options specific to the marking period. The students will demonstrate their knowledge of the elements and principles used in art and the techniques taught through the development and completion of their selected projects.
- 2-D art and focus art students work more independently. They will have the choice of working with the schedule above, building off ideas from above, and/or developing their own direction and voice by completing the proposal form.
